SHANTINIKETAN - 41st UNESCO World Heritage Site
SHANTINIKETAN became India's 41st UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site for which India is trying for a long time . It is located in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
In 1862, Debendranath Tagore spotted this scenic landscape and decided to establish an ashram. The area originally called Bhubadanga was renamed Santiniketan by Debendranath Tagore due to its conducive environment for meditation.
The building house called Shanti means " abode of peace".
In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore chose a significant portion of land and established a school based on Brahmacharya Ashram model. Later in 1921, this school evolved into a renowned world University known as Visva Bharti University.
SHANTINIKETAN is adorned with splendid sculptures, frescoes, murals, and paintings created by renowned artists such as Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij.
It is also known for its unique educational philosophy, which emphasizes the integration of nature, creativity and holistic learning. When in today's time educational institutions follow a closed classroom policy ,it follows the concept of an open air classroom where students are encouraged to learn in close connection with nature which gave them the feeling of near to nature .
As a lover of nature and having the habit of studying books sitting under a tree or in an open environment, if I ever get the chance to visit West Bengal , I would love to visit this beautiful and scenic place .
